Ryan Lindley as “NFL’s Greatest Stand-In”

Posted by Darren Urban on December 8, 2016 – 3:26 pm

NFL Films does some great work. I came across this short piece today that was posted, a six-minute video about former Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley as the “NFL’s Greatest Stand-In.” Obviously, Lindley’s turn(s) in Arizona didn’t go great. He’ll probably be most remembered for his hard, hard day against the Jets in 2012 or his struggles in the playoff game during the 2014 season. One of the things I always loved about Lindley, though, was that he never shied away from understanding and acknowledging his shortcomings. He did what he could when he was given the opportunity — which is outlined in this video.

I just remember a good guy, a guy who along with Logan Thomas helped Larry Fitzgerald shoot a commercial. A guy who knew he was probably in a losing battle when the team used a draft pick on a quarterback. A guy who did what he could when Thomas couldn’t do it and Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton got hurt. A guy who, when he threw a TD pass for the Colts, was still getting big support from his former Cardinals teammates.

“My man, Lindley” indeed.

Nice post Darren. I loved that commercial and always felt that anybody who would do a commercial like that, must be a pretty good guy who didn’t take himself too seriously but appreciated the opportunity for his time in the NFL.
Hope Logan Thomas makes it as a TE, always cheer for our exCards wherever they end up, feeling that they must have had something that got the attention of the brass who signed them as part of our organization.

As a huge Stony Case fan, why wouldn’t I love Ryan Lindley? As the Irish say, ” For Sure, For Sure.”

I liked Ryan Lindley. He was put into impossible situations by the Cardinals and he did the best he could, especially during that playoff game.

Ah, gone but never forgotten is Ryan Lindley. A good guy, probably works very hard. A player of limited ability but I never held that against him. Felt kinda bad for him during that 2014 season when we lost Palmer and Stanton and it all fell on him. It was very un-likely that he was going to play well enough to help the team win any of the games he had to step in for. Not an enviable situation for him at that time. But he did what he could.

Ryan Lindley was a bad quarterback. He is an NFL quarterback which means he should be able to win games.

This reminds me… Someone on this board owes me $1, based on a wager that neither Logan Thomas nor Phillip Sims would ever play another down as an NFL QB in a regular season game (this was after the season where Thomas got in as the #3 guy against the Broncos).

Nice job Ryan Lindley, you stepped in when we needed you and everybody couldn’t

My Way too Early Abbreviated draft..

Mr. Keim has many FA decisions to make…20-22 in total…
priority positions that will affect the draft..Campbell, Gresham, C.Jones, Jefferson, Swearinger, Minter, others like CB, Punter and WR all need to be determined..

We don’t know yet how high or low the Cards will pick, currently #12 before this weekend. Based on assumptions like (using franchise tag on Jones and BA not giving much credence in 1st RD WR’s) including needs and availability, I would be fine with the first 3 Rounds for AZ as follows:

    (assuming these JR’s all declare)

Round 1: S. Jones CB-WA -big CB with great ball skills.
(I could still see Keim resign Cooper or Simon as the 3rd CB next year)

Round 2: M. Rudolph QB. Ok St. Fits the mold of a BA QB, throws a great deep ball to WR’s and kids on jet skis. Palmer, will be the starting QB next year. Mason needs to benefit from a year learning from Carson, also this isn’t a great year for 1st round QB’s.

Round 3: I. Ford WR VA Tech. Perfect type of middle round WR that BA would want. I do see AZ adding 2 WR’s this spring with the departure of Floyd and the health questions of Smokey. They could sign a free agent vet, ie. A. Roberts, R. Woods, or K. Stills.

With Keim resigning/franchising C. Jones, keeping Minter, Gresham and either Jefferson or Swearinger.. Campbell is having a great year and with the absence of the Rookie DT and the regression of Gunter, this will be one of the most challenging areas to fix for 2017 if CC is not here.

Oh geez…can we AT LEAST finish the season before everybody begins with the draft? We still have work to do THIS SEASON, and having been through this SOOOO many times before, see no reason, really, to get excited about the draft as much can happen between now and then and we don’t even know, for sure, who will be doing the picking.
At this point our focus needs to be on winning the game at hand. Miami is hot,and they have a RB that is close to being as good as DJ. Our defense is going to have to be SAVAGE, with a take no prisoners mentality and it’s going to have to be an encore performance of last week only improved. WE CAN DO THIS!
Watching KC last night in 15 degree weather, the Raiders, totally out of their element and unable to hold on to the ball, took me back to the many playoff games I’ve endured at Arrowhead in the December sub-zero cold and how difficult it’s going to be going forward as many of the playoff games most certainly will be out doors in the freezing cold. This week we only have to worry about playing a great game in almost optimal conditions! It feels like our guys are finally stoked and we need to keep that fire alive!

    Kevin –

See? That’s why you ALWAYS get it in writing. It’s a sad state of affairs when a man can’t get a dollar won in an honest wager.

Good lord, folks, are we going to stand by as a man is deprived of a dollar that is rightfully his??

This is a travesty of justice, if ever there was one.

I will not stand for…..wait a minute….is it ME who owes Kevin a dollar?

JohnnyBluenose… You obliviously missed the Cards Panthers playoff game where Lindley was the Cards QB…. It was excruciating to watch that game as a Cards fan. He is one of the worst QB’s ever to wear a Cards uniform….. since I have been a fan since 1965…. Me am I an idiot… I think not…. anyone who thinks Lindley is a quality QB could be considered one… Are you related to him? Because only a relative could think he was a “good” QB….

I hope that the lack of buzz for this week’s game doesn’t reflect a lack of interest by the fans or lost hope, because that’s what it feels like to me. As you even pointed out, this week has been all about DJ, and to some degree Fitz, which I don’t quite understand, as there should be room for both and I don’t believe Fitz would choose personal glory over team support.
Rather than finishing strong, fans are ready to rush ahead toward planning the draft etc., as if the thrill is in playing armchair GM rather than the actual season, and although, granted, this season has been a gut buster, it taint over till it’s over!
While I find the different scenarios and possibilities for the off season intriguing, we have PLENTY OF TIME to speculate, fantasize, and wish for our “dream team” of the future, although I sometimes think we would have do as well throwing all the names into a slot machine and hitting the button. Right now this year’s team, hopefully, may have finally “clicked”, and, turned a corner, and until it’s over we need to finish strong supporting our Cards.
In the past, this team has been able to do well on the road when we weren’t doing well at home, and perhaps this will be a team building opportunity for our guys coming off a really good team win last week. WE CAN DO THIS, and there are enough scenarios going that if we win, could make us real contenders. This is December playoff football and the time of the year we should be focusing on the now! LET’S GO CARDS,WE CAN STILL FINISH STRONG!

This article is absurd. Maybe in a commercial but definitely not on the field. 2 of the worst decisions by NFL coaches and they involved Lindley, one of the worst Cardinal qbs ever. First when he was put in for Skelton in I think it was the Atlanta game. And then Lindley instead of Logan for the worst playoff performance by a qb ever. Why is it when someone doesn’t make the grade they are always labelled as good guys anyways?
