RB Kerwynn Williams promoted, Fauria cut

The Cardinals didn’t want to stick with three running backs after all. Saturday, the Cards promoted running back Kerwynn Williams from the practice squad, cutting tight end Joseph Fauria to make room on the roster. Bruce Arians hinted toward both Friday, when he said Williams would be the one the Cardinals likely would have turned to after the Andre Ellington injury had Chris Johnson not been there, and also noted that the tight ends as a group were healthier than they had been since training camp started.

Williams figures to still be behind David Johnson in the pecking order for work, although it gives Arians someone else to turn to after Chris Johnson. Given the way Arians talked about the backs Friday, maybe Williams does get a little more work though. Stepfan Taylor remains as a mainly special teams component. Williams was one of the last cuts after the preseason, a victim of the numbers game after David Johnson was drafted and then when Chris Johnson was signed.

Fauria’s release means the Cards are down to the (healthy) trio of Darren Fells, Jermaine Gresham and Troy Niklas at tight end, although Brandon Bostick remains on the practice squad.
